REFUGIO – Bee Community Action Agency, the Beeville-based organization that operated a poverty fighting network for almost 37 years, has ceased its operations in South Texas.

The Bee County Commissioners Court last week voted voluntarily to relinquish all Bee Community Action Agency programs as of June 4.

The Action Agency had served the counties of Aransas, Bee, Live Oak and Refugio.

The Rural Economic Assistance League Inc., based in Alice, has assumed all programs the Action Agency relinquished officially on June 5.

REAL director Martin Ornelas said REAL Inc. has been providing transportation for more than 30 years.

“There will be no changes at this time,” he said.

“It’s really about sustaining services as they are,” he added.

However, he said services may be expanded in the future.

He said new routes would be added, and an increase from three days to five days is being considered.

Ornelas said his ageny is using software called Shah Software that focuses on optimizing services while cutting costs.

“It’s amazing what technology can do,” he said.

The “Optimization” software is expected to result in a 40 percent savings while increasing services.
