Rev. John Brydson Berkley, 83, of Gonzales, died Monday, July 7, 2014, after a long fight with cancer.

Rev. Berkley was born to Ethel Mae and William Earnest Berkley in Dallas on Jan. 5, 1931. In 1955, he married Nan Remschel in Gonzales. During WWII, his family moved back to Austin where he graduated from Austin High School, the University of Texas and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Upon completion of seminary, he became a minister with the United Methodist Church (UMC) Southwest Texas Conference. He pastored in St. Marks UMC, Austin; Govalle UMC, Austin; First United Methodist Church (FUMC), Agua Dulce; FUMC Palacios; FUMC Hondo; FUMC Ozona; FUMC Beeville; Memorial UMC, Austin; FUMC Luling; and FUMC Rockport. In 1962, he helped the Palacios church and community rebuild after Hurricane Carla in 1961. While in Ozona, he helped the community members get a nursing home.

After 40 years of pastoring, he retired in 1995. During his retirement, he served on the United Methodist Church Southwest Conference board and continued to help in planning for the future of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nan; son, Mark Berkley; daughter, Rachel (Glen) McNiel; two grandchildren, Daniel and David McNiel; a sister, Camilla (John) Bordie; brother-in-law, Robert Remschel; and many nieces and nephews, cousins and their families.

Visitation was held at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 10. The funeral service was conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, in the First United Methodist Church in Gonzales.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Gonzales, and the Gonzales Youth Center, 522 Water St., Gonzales, Texas 78629.

Services were under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
