The Bee County Historical Society is sponsoring its first Youth Photography Contest. Ages run from 7 to 18 years of age. Youths can keep busy during the summer “shooting” from June 1 until Aug. 1; photos prior to these dates can also be used.

Judging will be Aug. 29-30 with announcement of winners on Sept. 20 during a reception at the historic McClanahan House, 206 E. Corpus Christi St. The reception will be held from 5-9 p.m. Photos will be on display for school tours until Oct. 20. Photos are sole property of the entrant and may be sold during or after the reception.

Entry fee is $5 per photo—limit three photos per category. Specify the category on the back of the photo along with age of the photographer.

There will be two divisions: Youth (ages 7-13) and Senior (ages 14-18). Prizes for each division include: 1st prize: $25 plus ribbon; 2nd prize: $20 plus ribbon; and 3rd prize: $15 plus ribbon. There will also be a Best of Show prize: $50 plus rosette.

All entries must be entered in a specific category:

•Category 1: Animals/Fauna/Birds/Insects/Reptiles/Amphibians (Color or B&W)

•Category 2: Landscapes/Wildflowers (Color or B&W)

•Category 3: Portrait/People (candid or formal)/Historical architecture (Color or B&W)

All photos will be judged on the following: Impact, storytelling, subject matter—34 points; creativity and composition—33 points; technical aspects—33 points. Entries classified incorrectly may be disqualified, or placed in the correct category as deemed appropriately by the contest committee.

Photos must accurately reflect the subject matter as it appeared in the viewfinder. Nothing should be added to an image, and aside from dust spots, nothing should be taken away. Only global adjustments will be allowed.

All photos must be in 8x10 format—printed on photo paper, framed and unmatted in plain black frame. No digital image files will be accepted. BCHS reserves the right to refuse entries deemed in poor taste.

Contest is limited to residents in Bee, Live Oak, Goliad, Karnes, Refugio and San Patricio counties. Forms will be distributed to all the ISDs in the areas mentioned and local schools.

Photos must be submitted by Aug. 16. (No late entries will be accepted.) If mailed, submissions MUST be received no later than Friday, Aug. 15. Mail to: Bee County Historical Society P.O. Box 142 Beeville, TX 78104.
