The final week of our Fizz! Boom! Read! Summer Program is upon us. Prizes (some of them provided by Albiar's Snowcone Place, The Texas State Aquarium, The San Antonio Zoo, and the Magik Theatre) will be awarded at a pizza party on Friday at 1:30, so all books must be returned by Friday in order to count towards your total.

But don't think this means the end of reading this summer—far from it! On Monday, July 28 we start our third annual Throwdown, whereby I challenge teams of readers to try and out-read me for three weeks. Come sign up now, because we're doing things a little different this year. The winning team will all receive prizes, but the top 3 readers, regardless of team, will receive special prizes. The person who reads the most pages will win a 32 inch HDTV. The second-place reader will get a portable DVD player, and the third-place reader will get an iPod Shuffle (all of these prizes are possible with the help of Wal-Mart Supercenter #524).

Our final Monday of science experiments was a blast as we talked some more about supercooling and tried the infamous Mentos and Diet Coke experiment. A sticky good time was had by all.

Last Thursday we were visited by Bob Hansler, who brought along some animal friends that he had found locally. The very excited snake and the very grumpy mama possum were big hits, as was the tarantula that hung out on his hat throughout the presentation. Mr. Hansler will be back this Thursday with a whole different science program, and you don't want to miss whatever he's got up his sleeve for this week.

So Fizz! Boom! Readers: get those books turned in by Friday and join us for a pizza party at 1:30 on Friday where prizes will be awarded. Throwdown Hopefuls: sign up now at the Runge Public Library so that you can be in the running for that super-swanky HDTV (Throwdown rules are available at the library).

C'mon Runge—let's get to reading! You can't win of you don't sign up!
