Five Karnes City Summer Track Club athletes joined hundreds of youth from across the United States and Puerto Rico last week at the Amateur Athletic Union’s Junior Olympics in Des Moines – and three hit personal records to end the 2014 competitions on a high note.

Joe Bishop coaches these youth who plan to continue their training and strive for personal records again next year.

Jacob Bonnet and Kyler Palmer competed in the decathlon July 26-27, with J. Bonnet finishing 27th and Palmer 29th in the 15-16-year-old division. The grueling 10-event competition involves gaining points in the 100 M. run, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 M. run, 110 M. hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1500 M. run. The youngest athlete in the bunch, J. Bonnet improved on all of his events except high jump and pole vault. Palmer struggled with a knee injury but still managed to throw a personal best in shot put.

Anna Bonnet threw turbo javelin 43 feet to place 30th in the nation in the 12-year-old girls division. She also hit a personal record in the discus with a throw of 47, 6 – three feet further than her regional throw – to rank 32nd nationally.

Theresa Bluhm ran a 2:49.08 800 M. to finish 59th in the 14-year-old girls division of the national games.

J. Bonnet also qualified for the Junior Olympics individually in javelin and ranks 16th in the nation among 15-16-year-olds with his throw of 120,04.

Competing in the 14-year-old boys division, Dylan Nichols threw javelin 67,08 to rank 38th in the nation.

These young athletes have been competing in AAU Track and Field since only early June.
