The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew chapter fifteen verses 21-28: And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying out after us." He answered, " I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." and her daughter was healed instantly.

Jesus had left his own land and traveled into the Gentile world. These Gentiles worshiped many different gods and idols. The disciples judged the Canaanite woman as a lowly Gentile trying to get Jesus' attention. And when Jesus tells her that she is not among the chosen people, she kneels and begs for help for her daughter. The woman was not presumptuous, but lowly; and she believed. It brought joy to Christ in a trying time, and it gave opening to his grace. Jesus did believe that God intended him to work through Israel. But he could not be cruel to a mother's pain and He did heal the girl. God's grace and mercy is abundant and for all believers.

Worship services at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Runge begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by fellowship and Adult Bible Study. Sunday School for the children, Women's Wednesday morning Bible study, and Third Thursday Fellowship will all resume in September. Come and worship.
