The Bee County Historical Society will hold its annual general membership meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, June 29, at the Joe Barnhart Library Dougherty meeting room on the first floor. New society board members will be nominated and elected at the meeting, and a report on the society’s projects will be given.

A special treat is in store for society members at this meeting with the appearance of Herndon Williams, treasurer and editor of the Baysider, chair of the Refugio County Historical Commission, and author of the Coastal Bend Chronicle. Williams will speak about a little known historical figure who lived in Beeville, Mary Amarro Pathoff, who is thought to be the last surviving member of the Karankawa Indian tribe, which frequented the Gulf Coast area of Texas.

According to historical records, Pathoff was born in about 1840 near Copano Bay. She and her younger brother Tom were orphaned about 1850 and were raised by the Power and Welder families at St. Mary’s in Aransas County. She moved to Beeville in the 1880s and died and was buried here in 1911. Williams will present what is known about her life.
