The recently released Dave Campbell’s 2009 Texas Football has the big ‘Cats ranked as the No. 8 team in the state and predicts the Refugio club will venture as deep as the state semifinals before bowing out to Division III powerhouse Daingerfield.
That means the Bobcats are also predicted to reign as the Region IV-2A champion in 2009.
Bobcat head coach Jason Herring explained in the magazine that being ranked is what the Bobcats and their fans expect.
“I like it, to be honest with you,” Herring said.
“There are a lot of coaches that don’t like it, but our kids expect to be there and the community expects to be there. We use it as a positive here.”
Refugio stayed alive through the quarterfinals last year and the Bobcats will definitely have their eyes on pushing even farther this year.
The ‘Cats also are picked to win the District 30-2A race, with Banquete and Odem earning the other two playoff spots.
The magazine has highlighted the Bobcats’ week four contest against Vanderbilt Industrial as one of the “Dream Tour” match-ups of the season.
Two Bobcat players were honored as preseason all-state picks by the magazine. Offensive lineman Dylan Klare and wide receiver Jourdan Ortiz were named to the elite preseason squad.
George West was the only other team from the area that cracked the preseason top 25 poll. The Longhorns are coming off an 11-1 season and are ranked 25th in the state in 2A, according to the magazine.
