Stanley Cup match results from BCC

The first annual “Stanley Cup” matches were held on May 3-4 at the Beeville Country Club. The competition is named in honor of the late Stanley Wright, a longtime PGA golf professional at the local club. The Blue team came out on top, 23-17, over the Red squad.

The format was Ryder Cup style matches with Saturday’s matches involving nine-hole four-ball (low ball) and a nine-hole alternate shot format in the afternoon. Both events were played as stroke play events. Sunday was the day for the 18-hole individual match play competition. The teams were drafted by playing captains Steve Patton (Red) and Ken Wilson (Blue). Teams were made up of BCC members, guests, former friends and students of Mr. Wright. Players enjoyed a fun weekend of competitive golf, great food, drink and music provided by the Trey Park Band.

In the four-ball matches, the Red team edged the Blues 5.5 to 4.5 points. Results included: Steve Gruy & Joan Reilly (42-R) def. Loren Council & John Hardwick (43-B), Pat Gruy & Viggo Gruy (B-45) def. Joe Hancock & Thom Aman (48-R), Jack Bond & Roy Gates (39-R) def. John Bond & Lane Pinchback (43-B), Trey Fuller & Gene Sassin (41-R) def. Mike Young & Roy McCleery (43-B), Elaine Chin & Ellis McKinney (37-B) def. Art Chin & Phil Ermis (43-R), King Fuller & Richard Rodriguez (37-R) def. Frank Hause & Jay Arredondo (40-B), John W. Beasley (38-R) def. Oliver Gonzales & Trey Park (41-B), Jean Ann Beasley & Andrew Hause (37-R) halved Pat McCoy & Mark Bledsoe (37-B), Kelly Black & Joe Wright (34-B) def. Darrel Juve & Mike Scotten (37-R), and Ken Wilson & Rick Vestal (35-B) def. Steve Patton & Jerry Don Barrier (37-R).

In the alternate shot matches the Blue team fought back for a decisive win 8.5 to 1.5 over the Red team. Results included: Loren Council & John Hardwick (41-B) def. Steve Gruy & Joan Reilly (48-R), Pat Gruy & Viggo Gruy (42-B) def. Joe Hancock & Thom Aman (44-R), John Bond & Lane Pinchback (42-B) def. Jack Bond & Roy Gates (47-R), Trey Fuller & Gene Sassin (43-R) def. Mike Young & Roy McCleery (43-B), Elaine Chin & Ellis McKinney (40-B) def. Art Chin & Phil Ermis (45-R), Frank Hause & Jay Arredondo (40-B) def. King Fuller & Richard Rodriguez (42-R), John W. Beasley & Jimmy Hunt (40-R) def. Oliver Gonzales & Trey Park (41-B), Pat McCoy & Mark Bledsoe (36-B) def. Jean Ann Beasley & Andrew Hause (39-R), Kelly Black & Joe Wright (35-B) def. Darrel Juve & Mike Scotten (43-R), Ken Wilson & Rick Vestal (36-B) def. Steve Patton & Jerry Don Barrier (37-R).

The individual match play on Sunday was evenly split with the Red and Blue teams each earning ten points. Results of those matches included: John Hardwick (B) def. Lane Pinchback (B) 3 and 2, Roy Gates (R) def. John Bond (B) 1 up, Roy McCleery (B) def. Gene Sassin (R) 3 and 1, Art Chin (R) def. Mike Young (B) 4 and 2, Trey Fuller (R) def. Ellis McKinney (B) 3 and 2, Elaine Chin (B) def. Phil Ermis (R) 2 up, Jay Arredondo (B) def. Richard Rodriguez (R) 5 and 4, King Fuller (R) def. Frank Hause (B) 7 and 6, Jimmy Hunt (R) def. The tournament also included closest to the hole and longest drive competitions. The winners for the two days in those events included: Saturday closest to the pin on #3/12 - Pat McCoy and on #7/16 - Elaine Chin, Sunday closest to the pin on #3/12 - Ellis McKinney and on #7/16 Joe Wright. Saturday’s longest drive on #5/14 (men) - Ken Wilson and (ladies) Jean Ann Beasley. Sunday’s longest drive on the same hole was Jerry Don Barrier and Jean Ann Beasley.
