The Beeville Trojan version of 7-on-7 football finished second last weekend in a state-qualifying tournament in Mission to advance to the state meet in College Station on July 11-12.

“I was very proud of our team for playing tough all day long. It was extremely hot and everyone contributed to our success,” said Trojan head coach Chris Soza.

“The offense and defense played real well and our kids learned to never quit. They kept their composure even when down by as many as 14 (points),” said Soza after watching the tournament.

The tourney started with pool play and the Trojan squad defeated McAllen Memorial 32-13 in the opening round game. The second contest had the Trojans edging LaJoya 27-26 to move up against undefeated Mission Veterans Memorial for the pool championship. The Trojans came through to win the title, 42-34.

That win placed the Trojans in the semifinals against Mercedes. The teams battled to the wire, but the Trojans tamed the Tigers 41-33 to advance to the tournament’s title game against the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs. The contest was a high-scoring affair and the ‘Dogs earned a close 49-35 win over the Trojans to capture the Mission tourney crown.

The top two teams from this tournament qualify to compete in the statewide tournament that will be held on July 11-12 in College Station.
