Though still undergoing treatment for serious injuries received in a traffic accident in April, Kamm walked into the new center on his own steam.
Hospital administrator Louis Willeke told the crowd that Scooter was the driving force for the $2.5 million addition to the hospital.
“This was Scooter’s dream and he made it mine,” Willeke said.
The administrator credited county taxpayers, the hospital board and the volunteers for the support that made the addition possible.
“That’s what we’re here for – to give the best patient care in Refugio County and that’s what we’re doing,” Willeke said.
The hospital auxiliary disbanded recently and left enough money for landscaping the Healing Garden and another garden on the south side of the hospital. The ladies were seated in a special place of honor.
Local artist Gwendolyn Branstetter painted a bluebonnet landscape for the center which graces the front entrance. Branstetter was also recognized.
More than 300 people walked through the facility and tested the state-of-the-art machines. Memberships are now available for $35 per month and $30 for senior citizens. Daily passes are $10 and longer memberships are offered at discounted rates. The facility will be open Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and on Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A number of people tested the equipment and offered rave reviews.
Deb Weber, who is currently on an exercise program, said she was impressed.
“To me, these machines are great for people who have health issues with their joints,” Weber said. “After working out on these, I have no pain of any kind, none at all.”
JoBeth Whitlow had a similar response.
“These are wonderful machines,” Whitlow said.
Fred DeLaGarza was equally impressed.
“This is a nice change for Refugio,” he said.
Glen Naylor, an octogenarian who serves on the hospital board, took his place on a treadmill and gave it a thumbs up.
The machines feature television monitors with cable hookups. Heart rate readings are also monitored on the equipment.
