The U.S. Academic Decathlon is the premier scholastic competition for high school students.

It is a team competition where students match their intellects with students from other schools.

Through a generous grant from the Joe Barnhart Foundation, A.C. Jones High School is able to continue this program for 2008-2009.

Students are tested in 10 categories:  art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, social science and speech.

The theme for this year’s competition is Latin America, with a special emphasis on Mexico. Students have been studying the economics of Mexico, as well as preparing for the Super Quiz.

This year’s Super Quiz topic is “evolutionary biology.” The team’s first practice meet will be in Sinton on Nov. 8.
