“Despite bad weather conditions, the Bobcats played well,” said Coach Joe Rios.
Poth won the coin toss and deferred to the second half letting Refugio’s offense hit the field first.
With first-game jitters and slippery playing conditions, the Bobcats started off slow, only gaining a first down on its first possession.
Refugio’s defense held strong, not allowing Poth’s offense to move the ball which seemed to hold true through the entire game.
After a 0-0 score in the first quarter, the Bobcats punched one in early in the second due to outstanding blocking by Refugio’s offensive line of Thomas Norris, Ryan Whitehead, Joe Castellano, Marcus Sanchez, and John Cisneros.
The line’s conquest of the Poth defenders helped pave the way for great rushing efforts by Tyler Castellano, Eli Oliver, Jimmy Resendez, and Jonathan Rosas. Tyler Castellano scored Refugio’s first touchdown on a fine run followed by great receiving efforts on part by Anfernee Friar on the conversion.
On Refugio’s very next possession the Oliver to Friar connection occurred again to add to the Bobcats lead followed up by a successful two-point conversion run by Jonathan Rosas.
Refugio’s next score came by the defense which proved to be the Bobcats strength.
Joe Castellano’s strong defensive efforts throughout the game proved too much for Poth.
Eli Oliver’s score came when Joe Castellano forced a Poth fumble, bringing the score to 21-0. Awesome defensive standouts were Joe Castellano, Marcus Sanchez, J.T. Moya, Eli Oliver, John Cisneros, Ryan Whitehead, Tyler Castellano, Jonathan Rosas, Sean Ponce, Jimmy Resendez and Thomas Norris.
“In all it was an outstanding effort by all the seventh grade Bobcats who continue the Bobcat tradition of winning,” Coach Rios said.
