The Skidmore-Tynan Lady Cats met the Refugio version of the Lady Cats on Tuesday and the S-T girls won in the match in three straight sets.

The victory ups the local ladies’ overall record to 12-7 and they are 2-0 in district play with an earlier win over Taft to start the district competition. Refugio is 1-1 in district play.

“Refugio has improved a lot from last year. The match was tougher than the score indicates. They did a lot of things right, we just capitalized on their mistakes,” said Lady Cat coach Judy Whatley.

The S-T Lady Cats are hoping to duplicate last year’s district title run that had them go undefeated through district play.

Skidmore-Tynan captured the first set of the best of five match, 25-20. Set two was a little easier as the S-T girls played well on defense and served well, according to coaches. The Bee County girls won set two, 25-16, for a 2-0 lead.

The S-T Lady Cats closed out the match in three straight with a 25-19 victory.

“We had a good hitting night led by Selina Acosta, Kathy Acosta and Rachel Mengers. D’Anne Wilder did a great job setting. We expect Refugio to be real tough the second round and keep on improving,” Whatley said.

Mengers finished with nine kills on the night. Wilder set up 21 points for assists in the three-set win. Mengers hit for two service aces against Refugio.

Kathy Acosta played well at the net and blocked two RHS hits. Kathy Mireles had five digs along the back line for Skidmore-Tynan.

The JV girls won their match with Refugio but the ninth-grade squad lost to the host RHS Lady Cats on Tuesday night.

The S-T girls played again last night (Friday), taking on the Three Rivers Lady Bulldogs in Skidmore. It will another cat-and-dog fight on Tuesday as the Banquete Lady Bulldogs travel to Skidmore to meet the tough Lady Cats. The first serve is set for 5 p.m.
