The Eagles faced the Ben Bolt Badgers in a game that seemed a little one-sided the first half. Down 21-8 at the start of the third quarter, the Eagles delivered a staunch whippin’ to overcome the Badgers by a score of 30-21.
The Eagles jumped on the board early as they took the opening kickoff and moved down field to the Badger 44-yard line. The next play, they were in the end zone with QB Andrew Parker ripping through defenders as he scampered 44 yards for the first score of the night.
A little tomfoolery on the extra point attempt would give the Eagles two points more to lengthen the lead to 8-0 with 10:10 still in the first quarter.
The Badgers took charge and never looked back the rest of first half, scoring on a 21-yard TD reception with 7:56 to go in the first period to make the score 8-7.
The Badger defense would deprive the Pettus offense on the next series as they intercepted a Parker pass. The Badgers meticulously moved the ball downfield and capped their second drive with a three-yard scoring run to move into the lead 14-8.
But the Badgers’ success would not come without punishment. Hunter Tomlin and Joe Jefferson took turns making Badger ball carriers pay for every yard.
McKinzie Torres then became a thorn in the side of the Ben Bolt offense. Torres snagged his first interception of the night at the Eagles’ own 37-yard line.
Fate had other ideas as on the very next play the Eagles fumbled the ball and gave it right back to the Badgers. Three plays later, the Badgers returned the favor as Austin Wessels fell on a loose ball deep in Eagle territory.
The Badger defense held and the Eagles went three and out. After the Eagle punt, the Badgers found the end zone again on a 17-yard TD pass.
After an extra point was successful, the Badgers lead was extended to 21-8.
Before the final ticks of the first half, Torres was at it again. This time intercepting a Badger pass on the 50-yard line and returning it to the Badger 48.
The Eagles moved into scoring range but were deprived again as a Badger defender intercepted another Parker pass with 14 seconds to go in the half.
The Badgers would have the ball at the start of the second half but the Eagles were all business. On the Badgers’ first offensive series of the second half, Tomlin made a Torres-like play and returned an interception to the Badger 7-yard line.
The next play, Parker rumbled into the end zone on a keeper to start closing the gap. The extra point made the score 21-15 with 10:01 left in the third period.
On the Badgers’ next series, Torres intercepted his third pass at the Badger 49-yard line and simply exploded, returning the ball the distance for another Eagle touchdown. The extra point was good and the Eagles retook the lead 22-21.
The fourth quarter began with Pettus’ defense going wild.
“Our defense really played great tonight,” said Pettus head coach Steve Marbach.
Abraham Escamilla, James Wolfe, Ulises Jaurez, James Constante and the rest of the Eagle defense pounded on the Badgers, never letting them past the Eagle 40-yard line for the rest of the game.
The Pettus defense held strong late in the quarter to let the offense deliver the final blow. The Eagle offense scored as Torres scampered into the end zone from 15 yards out. A two-point conversion put the Eagle lead at 30-21.
On the Badgers’ final offensive series, Torres reminded them he was still there by intercepting yet another pass with 51 seconds left in the game.
Parker ran for 75 yards on 21 carries and threw for 75 yards on 10 completions.
The Eagle player of the game was McKinzie Torres with four interceptions and two touchdowns on the night.
The Eagles travel to Beeville to take on the Skidmore-Tynan Bobcats on Saturday in the Bee County battle. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
