George West and Three Rivers students gathered for sunrise prayer at their respective school flagpoles to continue the tradition of “See You at the Pole™” on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
With the morning sun rays peeking from the clouds, the students let their “light shine before others” as in Matthew 5:16. Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
“See You at the Pole™” began with a handful of high school students in Burleson, Texas. Today millions of students across the nation meet each year on the fourth Wednesday in September for scripture-reading and hymn-singing. At George West there were 35 high school students and an additional 35 junior high students who joined other students across the world to pray for their fellow students, their teachers and administrators.
Whitney Orsak and Sean Stroleny helped organize the Three Rivers group of 40.
God used what He did among those teenagers and others who were holding similar prayer meetings at their schools to birth a vision in the hearts of youth leaders across Texas, the students noted.
As in all great movements of prayer, “See You at the Pole™” did not begin in the hearts of people, organizers said. It began in the heart of God. God used the obedience of a small group of teenagers to ignite what has become an international movement of prayer among young people.
Since 1991, “See You at the Pole™” has grown to God-sized proportions. Within only a couple of years, students were praying in several countries around the world. Now, more than 3 million students from all 50 states participate in SYATP. Students in more than 20 countries take part. In places like Canada, Guam, Korea, Japan, Turkey and the Ivory Coast, students are responding to God and taking seriously the challenge to pray.
