The Skidmore-Tynan Lady Cat volleyball team took an evening off from their district battles on Friday night to meet the John Paul Lady Centurions. The S-T ladies won the best of five match in three straight to improve to 16-7 on the year.

The scores were 25-23, 25-11 and 25-10.

“We first took John Paul for granted. This school has only had volleyball for several years. They are up and coming and a few more years of experience will make them a force to be reckoned with,” said S-T head coach Judy Whatley.

The Lady Cats dominated sets two and three with a strong service game that had the S-T girls hitting for nine aces in the match. Kathy Mireles led the team with three aces on the night.

D’Anne Wilder set up 12 of the team’s 15 assists. Rachel Mengers led the S-T girls in kills with 14, while Mireles played strong along the back line with seven digs on defense. Three Lady Cats worked hard along the net for two blocks each. Kathy Acosta, Selina Acosta and Mengers all put down two Lady Centurion hits for points.

The S-T girls played on Tuesday night in Bloomington to restart their district race. The Lady Cats are 4-0 in district play and are looking to duplicate last year’s unbeaten district record.

“We are playing much more relaxed and with more confidence. We are serving very well which gives teams trouble returning the ball, thus allowing us to have better offensive attacks,” Whatley said.

“The team is gelling at the correct time.”

Friday night will have the Lady Cats visiting Taft. Play begins at 5 p.m.
