The Pettus Eagles traveled to face the Woodsboro Eagles this past Friday night in a district matchup that was crucial to both teams.

Pettus demonstrated a sound passing attack but was unable to fend off Woodsboro and dropped its second district game of the season.

Pettus attempted to get things going right away with QB Ryan Beck completing three nicely thrown passes; the first was a six-yard completion to McKenzie Torres. Then nine more yards with a catch from Taylor Yeoman. The third was again to Torres for 11 yards to the Woodsboro 20-yard line. Beck then tried a field goal from 30 yards out that fell short of the mark.

Woodsboro took over and three plays later was in the end zone on a 20-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good, giving Woodsboro a seven-point lead with 5:07 in the first period.

Both defenses showed their might by keeping opposing offenses from scoring for nearly two whole quarters.

Hunter Tomlin, Joe Jefferson, Abraham Escamilla and company held back an aggressive Woodsboro offense until the host Eagles found a crack in the Pettus defense and scored from seven yards out on a QB keeper with 3:27 left in the third quarter, extending Woodsboro’s lead to 13-0.

Pettus tried to mount a comeback early in the fourth period when Beck unleashed a 23-yard strike to Torres in the end zone. Pettus booted the extra point to make the score 13-7 with 9:31 left in the game.

Nearly six minutes later, Woodsboro sealed the deal with a one-yard touchdown run and a two- point conversion to make the score 21-7.

“We made some critical mistakes tonight,” said head coach Steve Marbach.

“We’ll just have to regroup and get ready for next week.”

Pettus’ performance was not lacking. Beck completed 14 of 27 passes for 129 yards on the night. Torres was responsible for eight of those catches for 103 yards making him the Eagle player of the week.

Next up for Pettus is a face-off against district powerhouse Falls City this Friday night in Pettus. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
