The Longhorns overcame a season-high 160 penalty yards that were of the 15-yard variety for the most part.
Defensively, Riley Rocha, Aaron McCabe, Thaddeus Pierce and Zane Schorp had outstanding games. Joseph Moore, Brett Epperson, and Michael Fuentes also played well. The Longhorn Offense scored on their first possession with a time consuming drive finished by a six-yard Cayleb Holt run. Albert Gamez ran in the two-point conversion and the Longhorns led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.
QB Gamez threw one pass for the night but it was a big one, hitting Zane Schorp for a 75-yard touchdown. Gamez passed to Shannon Taylor for the two-point conversion.
Late in the second quarter, Cotulla drove the ball, aided by several Longhorn penalties, and kicked a 22-yard field goal.
Cayleb Holt took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 85 yards for the touchdown. Ty Jimmerson followed with the extra point kick bringing the score to Longhorns 23 - Cowboys 3 at the end of the first half.
After recovering a Longhorn fumble, Cotulla moved into field goal range and was successful on a 28-yard attempt bringing the score to 23 to 6.
Shannon Taylor closed-out the third quarter scoring with a one-yard run, but the two-point conversion run failed. Cayleb Holt ended the scoring in the third quarter with a 13-yard scamper. Gamez followed with the two-point conversion run making the final score George West Longhorns 37 and the Cotulla Cowboys 6.
Joseph Lopez led the thundering herd running attack with 81 yards on eight carries. Albert Gamez had 40 yards on just three carries.
The much anticipated game matching the Longhorns against the Bulldogs for the district championship and Live Oak county bragging rights will be played Friday, Nov. 6 in Three Rivers.
Both teams are undefeated in district play and both will move into the state playoffs. Longhorn Fans, be sure to travel to up the road and support the Big Blue Wrecking Crew Friday. Jourdanton and Dilley will also play Friday for the third play- off berth in the district.
