It is truly amazing how God’s people repay Him for their salvation. Through the atoning death of Christ, believers’ lives were purchased in blood at Calvary. With this thought in mind, it is truly amazing when one hears the statement: there is nothing to be thankful for.
Reflecting on what many consider to be the first Thanksgiving celebration, the pilgrims and native Americans at Plymouth Rock, the pilgrims were thankful they had survived their early ordeals in the New World. They were cognizant of the fact that God had established their colony. They were truly grateful.
While many consider Thanksgiving to be no more than football games, the ushering of shopping days for Christmas and other craziness, Thanksgiving consists of being grateful for one’s special blessings. When believers recognize the true significance of Thanksgiving, all must realize that God has provided the greatest reason to be thankful — one’s eternal salvation through Jesus Christ.
Family gatherings and dinners, spending time with friends and even shopping days are all extra blessings from God. But when one forgets God, these benefits can disappear. If one does not cultivate and care for one’s blessings, those blessings tend to slip away from one’s grasp.
The text reminds readers that it is God who makes and establishes them. Contrary to political correctness, the early explorers had God in their plans as they came to the New World. Whether they were English, Spanish or French explorers, the first men who set foot on dry land usually included a minister. These men recognized the importance of God in the lives of humanity.
The writer of the text, Moses, is asking Israel about their compensation to God for their deliverance. He is reminding them of God’s blessings and benefits. America needs to remember that it is God who established her. America needs to embrace the concept that she is a nation under God and subject to God’s standards.
As Thanksgiving Day draws near, all must realize that Jesus Christ gave the greatest blessing — His life. As each reflects on their blessings, let all embrace His saving grace.
