Floresville – Well-known South Texas pastor Buckner Fanning will be a guest speaker Sunday, Jan. 3, as Wilson County kicks off its sesquicentennial celebrations with a “Faith of Our Fathers” event.

State Rep. Edmund Kuempel will be the master of ceremonies during this historic event from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the new Floresville High School cafeteria in Floresville. The event will highlight “Years of Religious Endeavor in Wilson County” and is free and open to the public.

Fanning served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and, as a pastor, has shared his faith for more than 50 years in San Antonio and the surrounding area. His extensive television ministry carried messages of faith and hope across South Texas and around the world for 25 years.

County Judge Marvin Quinney will read a proclamation designating 2010 as the Wilson County Sesquicentennial Year, marking 150 years since the county’s founding. Haril Walpole, pastor of the Marcelina Baptist Church near Floresville, also will be a guest speaker.

The event will include Sesquicentennial Committee members in period attire, bagpipers, music, scripture readings and refreshments. County memorabilia will be available for purchase.

This is the first of the county’s sesquicentennial celebrations. Many events are planned through the coming year, including Wilson County’s Official Birthday Party on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Wilson County is home to Rancho de las Cabras, part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The county has contributed more members to the Texas Rangers than any county in the state.

Floresville, the county seat, is known as the “peanut capital of Texas,” and is home to the annual Floresville Peanut Festival held in October.

The county is also home to the La Vernia Bluebonnet Fest in May and the Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee, held each June.
