Three Rivers Elementary representatives recently attended the National Center for Educational Achievement Awards in Austin. The Just for Kids organization is committed to recognizing high performing schools achieving academic growth based on TAKS scores. TRES was recognized for campus Science program and scores. The awards keep rolling in for Three Rivers Elementary: TEA Exemplary Campus, Texas Reading First Spotlight Campus, National Title 1 Distinguished Campus, Award for Achievement in Science, Texas Reading First Spotlight Campus.

Texas campuses are rated with regards to subgroup performances. The number of tests given on the Elementary campus which serves grades PK-5 is large and the subgroups many. Educators are expected to get results with all student groups (White, Hispanic, and Economically Disadvantaged). No child left behind means no child left child behind.

TRES students are veteran test takers. Participation in the Texas Reading First Grant required our campus to develop a robust assessment program. Beginning with Kindergarten, our students have been assessed with universal screeners, progress monitoring tools, benchmark assessments, and outcome measures. Everything (budgeting, supplies, staff development, intervention grouping) is determined by student data. A few teachers were reassigned based on student data and teacher strengths. Not a popular decision, but the right decision that yielded the quick results. The “buy-in” was not immediate, but the results have been indisputable.

As the success began to happen in Reading, the framework was expanded into other subjects. Data is no longer a four letter word. Reading, Writing, Math, and Science scores continue to rise. The mounds of paperwork often seem cumbersome yet offer teachers a wealth of information to impact instruction.

Recent grants have given our campus the opportunity to purchase many supplies and update our technology tools. The latest research-based programs and staff development is available to our staff, yet most of us agree, it’s the people not the programs who have made the biggest difference on our campus. A great group of people has come together to achieve common goals.

“When things do not go well, take responsibility. . .When things go well, give others credit. . .”

Credit and congratulations to the staff and students at Three Rivers Elementary School.
