The 7th and 8th grade girls basketball teams made a clean sweep at the Skidmore-Tynan basketball tournament this past weekend. Both Lady Cat teams came home with 1st place trophies.
The 7th grade Lady Cats defeated Ingleside and Skidmore while the 8th grade defeated Ingleside and Pettus.
“The Lady Cats have had a very successful season this year,” said Coach LisaBrown.
The 7th grade has only one district loss and the 8th grade is undefeated so far this year.
“David Hemphill, Refugio’s head basketball coach, has come in and made very positive changes to our basketball program and the girls really like him,” Brown said. “Our teams have worked exceptionally hard this season and it shows.”
The Lady Cats hosted Skidmore on Monday Feb. 2 at Lady Cat gym. The 7th grade team took the win against Skidmore’s B team with a score of 14-11.
Scoring for the Lady Cats were Priscilla Lara with 6 points, Raeven Barraza, 4; Jessica Vasquez and Rylie Villarreal, 2 each. Halei Williams and MaKayla Havens added to the win defensively.
The A team clawed Skidmore 37-12. On the boards for Refugio were Kaitlyn Williams with 14 points, Paige Wiginton, 6 points, Kiasha Brown 5 points; Ally Coscetti and Alyssa Mancilla, 4 each; Megan Simmons and Hai-Lee Koonce, 2 each.
Katie Snyder added to the win with very aggressive defense.
The Lady Cat 8th grade team ousted Skidmore 40-6. Leading the Lady Cats victory was Morgan Klaevemann with 13 points, Jackie Gonzalez, 10; LaTerrian Perkins, 8; Kenzie Herring, 4; Shaylan Brown, 3; and Anna Castellano, 2.
The Lady Cats will finish out district play next week with a road trip to Bloomington.
