Construction of the multi-purpose dome is expected to get underway soon at Woodsboro ISD. U.S. Congressman Ruben Hinojosa, who was instrumental in obtaining the grant and was the first to announce the grant for Woodsboro, is expected to meet with school officials on Tuesday, Feb. 16, during his visit to the county.

Superintendent Steven Self announced the proposed construction schedule at a meeting last Tuesday with the Woodsboro council. The FEMA grant money to construct the dome was awarded to the town as a disaster shelter.

Self said a bit of re-engineering had to be done, which delayed the project. Although construction is required to be completed before December 2010, Self said an extension could be requested.

Steve Schubert also received a thumbs up from the council on a proposed project to alleviate a hazard at the elementary school involving parents and buses picking up children.

Schubert plans to construct a fence around the parking lot on the west side of the school to prevent children from darting into the street. The fence would alleviate crossing the street except at the crosswalk.

In other matters, the newly formed substandard building committee in Woodsboro turned in its first list of three substandard buildings not up to building codes Tuesday night.

Mayor George Hernandez said the council will use the recommendation and proceed with enforcement of the ordinance.
