“In water one sees one’s own reflection, but in wine one beholds the heart of another.” French proverb

Regina Staggs quoted the French proverb at the annual meeting of the Refugio County Historical Society on Thursday, Feb. 4.

Regina, along with her husband David, are in their first year of production at the new Texas South Wind Vineyard and Winery. Located about 10 miles north of Refugio, just over the Goliad County Line, the vineyard was featured at the meeting, held in the Refugio County Museum.

The South Wind Winery officially opened in Dec. 2009 with an impressive offering of 11 wine varieties. Besides several wines in the traditional red and white categories, they offer a blackberry wine and wines of the sherry and port types.

They are buying the entire crop of white grapes from a vineyard outside Goliad. But since wine production by the 180 Texas wineries has outstripped the Texas supply of grapes, South Wind is also having grapes trucked in from California and Oklahoma.

Their first year wine production was 1,000 bottles and is almost sold out. They are planning to increase their output in the second year and market to the Coastal Bend region.

The business meeting of the Historical Society was conducted by Bart Wales, president, with reports from other officers.

The Museum had a very good year with 644 visitors from 109 places in Texas, plus 27 States and 15 foreign countries.

The historical society and museum hosted a workshop for small museums in conjunction with the Texas Historical Commission.

The most visited exhibit was the large display of silk scarves designed by Kermit Oliver for Hermes of Paris. The historical society also collaborated with the Refugio County Historical Commission in producing the first historical calendar for 2010.

These calendars are available at the museum. The museum has plans for new exhibits and renovation of existing exhibits in 2010.
