Three Rivers Family Career and Community Leaders of America participated in the Region V meeting in Corpus Christi in January 29. Ten teams participated in STAR events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) by conducting various community service projects in and around our community and individual projects to develop leadership skills and to prepare for future careers.

The following teams will advance to the state meet in Dallas in April.

Rachel Dobie in Focus on Children recorded children’s books onto CD for a Kindergarten class.

Christen Lerma and Klare Escamilla in Chapter Service Project Display collected consumable “white” goods and money to donate to South Texas Children’s Home.

Lea Luna and Amber Martinez in National Programs presented a program on the effects of drinking and driving to 7th and 8th grade students hoping to prevent alcohol related accidents in our community.

Two teams from Three Rivers Middle School competed and have advanced to the state level. Tessa Gregory and Shea White collected books for Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Chapter Service Project Display and the team of Brittany Wilson, Amber Mendoza, Heather Thomas and Kristen Almendarez will be competing in Focus on Children for their efforts in providing healthy snacks to elementary students who were involved in an after school tutoring program.

Other participants at the regional level were April Lemos in Job Interview, Adriana Sulaica and Desiree Rocha in Focus on Children, Darcy Orsak and Lindsey Weber in Interior Design, Cassy Alvarado and Matthew Studlar in Illustrated Talk and Hannah McAfee, Crystal Poenisch, and Megan Cruz in Chapter Service Project Display.

Thank you to everyone who helped these students with their fund raising efforts. We wish them luck as they prepare for the state competition.
