Acting Police Chief Fernando Garcia was working during a Stone Garden operation when he observed the traffic violation. As a result of what the officer believed was the smell of burnt marijuana inside the vehicle, a search was conducted. The officer reported finding a small amount of marijuana residue on the floorboard of the car. Four occupants were traveling together.
“Upon checking the suspects, John Anthony Gutierrez Jr., was found to be in possession of 14 grams of cocaine in his right shoe,” Garcia reported.
The acting police chief said the department’s pro-active policy on drugs will continue.
“I want to assure these individuals that we will not stop pursuing them,” Garcia said. “It is our job to provide the residents of Refugio with a safe environment and that is exactly what we are doing. I am extremely proud of my officers and the work that they are providing.”
Narcotics Officer Dean Ochoa said that a team effort will continue involving help from local citizens.
“Officers are taking the initiative to look for individuals selling drugs in our community, especially when drug dealers come from out of town thinking they can get away with it,” Ochoa said.
