Lady Horns capture tourney title

The George West Varsity Softball team had a great week of softball. The Lady Horns were a perfect 6-0 for the week. The Lady Horns defeated the Pettus Lady Eagles on Monday night by a score of 10-0.

Maggie Ham pitched four shutout innings and Tiffany Garza threw a perfect fifth inning. The Lady Horns got 10 hits on the night. Marley Snider, Salina Chapa, Maggie Ham, Tiffany Garza each had two hits. Kayla Wallek and Shawna Talley each had a hit for the Lady Horns.

On Thursday, the Lady Horns traveled to Pettus Tournament and defeated Taft J.V. by a score 18-0 in three innings. In the night game they took on the Pettus Lady Eagles and defeated them by a score of 18-3. Tiffany Garza pitched the entire game. Tiffany earned her second win of the season. The entire line-up got at least one hit.

On Friday night the Lady Horns traveled to Natalia to take on the undefeated district Natalia Lady Mustangs. It was an awesome game! Neither team could get much going at the plate. Finally in the top of the fifth inning Salina Chapa got a double to center field. Maggie Ham hit the second pitch over the center field fence for a 2-0 lead. That would be all the scoring for the night. Maggie pitched her tenth shutout of the year. She allowed three hits and struck out 18 Lady Mustangs. The final score George West 2-0. With the win, the Lady Horns improved to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in district.

On Saturday, the Lady Horns went back to Pettus and took on the Kenedy Leopards. George West defeated Kenedy by a score of 15-0. Kate Jimerson, Shawna Talley, Marley Snider, Kayla Wallek, and Rylie Shannon each had two hits for the Lady Horns. Maggie pitched her sixth no hitter of the season. She improved her record to 11-2.

In the championship game, the Lady Horns took on the Charlotte Lady Trojans. It was an exciting game. The Lady Horns got on the scoreboard in the second inning. Kate Jimerson scored on a RBI single by Jessica Lichtenberger. Tiffany Garza started the game and pitched five innings and gave up only one run. The score remained tied until the top of the seventh inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Maggie Ham hit a three RBI triple to left field to give the Lady Horns a 4-1 lead. The Lady Horns held the Lady Trojans in the bottom of the seventh for the tournament championship.

Several Lady Horns were named to the All Tournament team, Kayla Wallek, Salina Chapa, Shawna Talley and Tiffany Garza. Maggie Ham was named tournament MVP.

Great job ladies! The Lady Horns record for the season 16-4.
