Altair Rice running back Zacchaeus Foster proved to be too much for the Wrecking Crew Defense to handle as they were defeated 26 to 13 by the Raiders Saturday afternoon at Victoria Memorial Stadium. Foster rushed for 292 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

The 2008 Longhorns joined an elite list of George West teams to make the third round of the state football playoffs. Teams from 1958, 1960, 1963, 1966, 1995, 1996, and 1997 also made deep runs into the playoffs. The 2008 Longhorns overcame adversity and should be proud of their 11-1 season record. Seniors Marciano Sanchez, Chayson Holt, Dustin White, Cameron Moore, Colton Tindol, Travis Walker, Scott Rosenbaum, Lane Wallace, Marcus Miller, Lucas Rannefeld, Robert Kerr, David Torres, Holden Holm, Donavon Grimes, Joey Leal and Kenneth Blevins will be remembered for their tenacity and team play.

The Longhorns got on the scoreboard first on a Shannon Taylor one yard run to conclude a 57 yards, eleven play drive. Ty Jimmerson PAT was successful led 7 to 0. George West fumbled the football away to the Raiders just before half and Foster scored on a 49 yard run with 47 seconds to go in the first half. Their extra point kick failed, however. The first half ended with George West leading 7-6.

The Longhorns received the second half kick-off but were unable to move the football. Altair Rice mounted a drive and went ahead with 8:08 left in the third quarter on a 15 yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt again failed and they led 12 to 7. On the ensuing possession, Longhorn quarterback Colton Tindol found back Scott Rosenbaum wide open for a 66 yard pass completion and touchdown. The run for the two point conversion failed and with 5:58 in the third quarter George West again led 13 to 12. The Raiders were able to score again on their next possession with a 22 yard passing touchdown. The extra point failed and the Altair Rice led 18 to 13. The teams exchanged punts and then with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter the Longhorns recovered a Raider fumble at their own 37 yard line and moved the football to the five yard line before failing on a fourth and one yard attempt where they turned the ball over to the Raiders. Running back Foster took the handoff on the play and broke two tackles on the way to a 96 yard touchdown run and rushed successfully for the two point conversion bringing the score to 26 to 13 with 5:51 in the game thus ending the Longhorn’s chances for victory. This Longhorn opponent was state-ranked and a very formidable opponent but the Big Blue Wrecking Crew played hard as usual but came up short.

These games played by great football teams are usually decided by one or two key plays as this one was decided. I thank the 2008 George West Longhorns on behalf of the many Longhorn fans for the great season and the great memories.
