Refugio High School junior Logan Koonce cleared 14’6 to finish second place in the pole vault at the state track meet in Austin Friday.

Logan’s first vault was a heart-breaker. The vaulter easily cleared the bar set at 13 feet, but brushed it on the way down, knocking it off.

“He was two feet over the bar and it was probably his best technical vault of the day,” said Coach Jacob Ray. “He just did not get deep enough into the pit.”

Logan recovered nicely to clear it on his second attempt. He would not miss again until the bar reached 15 feet, and it was good enough for second place.

“When you think about it, there are about 220 schools in 2A, and each school can have three varsity vaulters,” Coach Ray said. “That means that there can be about 660 possible 2A Pole vaulters. Logan is better than 559 of them. I think that is really awesome!”
