The Pettus Eagles opened the first round of the Charlotte tournament last weekend against a tough Knippa squad. But, then found the winning way as they ripped off two wins for the consolation trophy and followed that with an impressive win over Karnes City on Dec. 9.

The contest with Knippa was close over the first two plus quarters but the Knippa boys hit from anywhere and everywhere over the quarter and a half to put the game away. The final was a 89-66 loss for the Eagles.

Joe Jefferson and McKinzie Torres led the Eagle scoring attack with 14 tallies apiece. Andrew P. hit for 11 in the loss. Alonzo Carreon followed with eight markers. Hunter Tomlin added seven points while Aaron Escamilla and Michael Perkins both hit for six points.

The second round of the Trojans’ tourney had the Eagles facing district for Runge. The Yellowjackets and the Eagles played evenly over the first two quarters. Runge held a slim, one-point lead, 25-24, at the half.

The Eagle defense was the difference in the second half.

“Runge played an excellent game, but our second half defense was tough, only allowing a total of 20 second half points,” said Eagle head coach Steve Marbach.

The Eagles scored 28 points in the second half to emerge with a 52-45 victory. Torres led the way with 14 points with Andrew P. right behind him with 13 tallies. Jefferson had nine in the win. Carreon followed with eight points and Perkins made four. C.J. Gill and Tomlin contributed two apiece.

That win over Runge put the Eagles into the consolation finals against the Cotulla Cowboys. The Pettus boys started out hot and after a 14-14 first quarter, the Eagles hit for 21 points in the second eight minutes to forge a 35-24 halftime lead over the Cowboys. The Eagles added two more points to their lead in the third quarter to make it a 51-38 advantage going into the final period. The Cowboys’ comeback in the fourth period was close, but the Eagles held on for a 65-63 win.

Andrew P. led the Pettus scoring in this contest with 16 points. Jefferson followed with 12 markers. Carreon was also in double figures with 10 tallies. Torres supplied eight points in the win. Tomlin added seven. Perkins sank six and Ryan Beck, four. Escamilla added two to complete the Eagle scoring.

The win gave the Eagles the consolation trophy in the Charlotte tourney and a lot of floor time to continue to improve as a team.

Tuesday night the Pettus boys hosted the always tough Karnes City Badgers.

“We played our best game of the year, so far, defending, rebounding and scoring well,” Marbach said.

The teams were tied at 16-16 at the end of the first eight minutes. The Eagles went up by two, 34-32, as the halftime buzzer sounded. It was the third quarter that proved to be the difference maker. The Eagles came out hot and poured in 22 points while holding the Badgers to 15. That made it a 56-47 game.

The pace slowed a bit over the last quarter. The Badgers cut just two points off the Eagle lead, 14-12, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overtake the high-flying Eagles. Pettus took the victory at 68-61.

Carreon topped the Eagles in scoring with 20 points on the night. Andrew P. recorded 15. Jefferson hit for 12 and Torres added eight. Tomlin followed with seven. Perkins contributed six. Beck had four and Escamilla closed out the scoring with two.

The Eagles competed in the Nordheim tournament this past weekend and were in Runge on Tuesday night. Friday night’s tilt will also be a road game for the Eagles as they travel to Kenedy to tackle the Lions.
