Marcela Leal wins gold at state gymnastics meet

Marcela Denise Leal won best all around in Level 6 of the USA Gymnastics State meet in Plano recently.

The 13-year-old Refugio eighth grader took first place in vault with a score of 9.425,; third in beam with a 9.150; fourth in floor exercise with a 9.025; and fourth in uneven bars with an 8.625.

Her score of 36.225 netted Marcela the best all around first place trophy.

The gymnast trains with Angie Goldstein of Tags Gymnastics in Portland. Marcela has been studying under Goldstein since 2003.

In addition to gymnastics, Leal is an honor student and an all-around athlete. She competes in volleyball, basketball and track.

Marcela is the daughter of Eugene and Guadalupe Leal of Refugio.
