County Press three-peats contest wins

The Refugio County Press won top prize in headline writing in the 2010 Texas Better Newspaper Contest presented by the Texas Press Association at the 131st summer convention June 19 in San Antonio.

The winning entry, Bobcats bust Brahmas in boo-boo burdened battle, was on the sports page in the Sept. 10, 2009, issue.

“Never seen alliteration taken to this level. Clever, accurate and fun,” the judge said.

The County Press also captured the top prizes in that category in the South Texas Press Association and Gulf Coast Association contests.

Kenda Nelson’s and Velma Gonzalez’s feature photos won second place. Of Nelson’s photo of Kodye Neel, 9, and her award-winning steer, the judge wrote, “interesting photo – nice composition – like the blur.

Both photos won top prize in the STPA and GCPA contests.

The Press also won a fourth place for sports coverage. The judge said, “Good, solid job of covering local sports. The paper also won at the STPA and GCPA contests for sports coverage.
