He was preceded in death by two daughters, Viola Sanchez and Estella Sanchez Cabrera.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ernestina Zambrano Sanchez; one daughter, Rosauda Sanchez of Austin; two sons, Abel Sr. (Elvira) Sanchez of Victoria and Joseph (Gina) Sanchez of Corpus Christi; four grandsons, Gabriel (Candy) Cabrera of San Antonio, Juan Cabrera of San Marcos, Alex Cabrera of New Zealand and Abel Sanchez Jr.; three granddaughters, Amanda Sanchez, Natasha Sanchez and Katrina Sanchez; three great-grandchildren, Cristian Cabrera, Isabela Cabrera and Adrian Luke Sanchez Lara. He raised his three grandsons, Gabriel, Juan and Alex Cabrera, as his own sons after their mother’s sudden death. Jose Sanchez believed it was better to give, rather than to receive. Raising these three men was such a blessing. His grandchildren brought him great joy. Jose lived a beautiful life; he served the church tirelessly. For six years, he served at St. James Catholic Church. Jose was a CYO sponsor, taught CCD and was a Boy Scout master. He loved being involved with the children of the parish. Jose was a Master Plumber for 50 years and fixed many problems in homes throughout Beeville and surrounding communities. He was known for discounting and providing free services for those in need.
A rosary was recited on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home by the family. The funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Patrick Donohoe and Father Balswamy Pasala officiating. Burial was held on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas with full military honors. Pallbearers were Gabriel Cabrera, Juan Noe Cabrera, Abel Sanchez Jr., Oscar Zambrano, Ben Gonzales and Tony Collins. Honorary pallbearer was Cristian Cabrera.
