While many South Texans are surviving the late summer heat and wishing for the first cold front’s arrival, some are preparing for the annual state sales tax holiday, or tax-free weekend, Aug. 20-22.

Yes, it’s already back-to-school time – not a surprise to teachers, football team and band members and most other students and their parents.

“This is the 12th straight year in which families will take advantage of sales tax savings,” Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said in a press release. “This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, shoppers can stock up on tax-free school supplies, school backpacks and most children’s and adults’ clothing and shoes priced at less than $100.”

Reporter Sarah Taylor has provided some valuable words of advice in today’s front-page story, including get there early, stay calm and know what’s on the list. We also have furnished a complete list of tax-free items online at our website,

We encourage our readers in the Bee County area to support your hometown merchants on this tax-free weekend. In addition to Beall’s, Wal-Mart, H-E-B and Walgreen’s, don’t forget other locally owned stores, such as Bella’s and A Perfect Fit.

Remember to pack your patience and kindness. Here’s hoping you find some great bargains and a friendly, courteous atmosphere.

Have a great school year.
