Sept. 9th began the new year of the Lagarto Community Club monthly meetings. We started our year with 12 members present and a new theme “March On”. Everyone committed to march into the new year with spirit and determination to make it the best year ever! The club officers hosted the meeting. The room was decorated in red, white and blue and little signs everywhere with the slogan “March On”. In the absence of President Lucy Cantu, Vice-President Linda Avila called the meeting to order. Jessica Keese read a poem entitled “To a Beautiful Woman”. Next she read “5 Tips for a Woman”. Most inspiring was the poem by Audrey Hepburn. Linda Black gave the blessing and we broke for a wonderful pot luck luncheon.

When the meeting resumed, the minutes for the last meeting held May 13th and the treasurer’s report were read and approved. Peggy Barnett was given a round of applause for going out of her way to call members during the recent storm. Trish Arink volunteered to be the phone person for this year to notify everyone of meetings and events. Our program this month was the presentation of our new Membership Book for the club year 2010-2011. We discussed repairs and improvements that we would like to do on the building this year. A cleanup workday is scheduled for Sept. 24th at 9 a.m. for the members to clean the yard and inside. It was decided to have a rotating duty roster for Thursday of each week to clean the kitchen and bathrooms.

From a discussion of the merits of our Senior Meals program, it was decided, due to the lack of participation, to discontinue the senior meals beginning in Oct. We will finish out the meals in Sept. and, during that time, let the attendees and the community know that, as of Oct. 1st, there will no longer be meals on Wednesdays.

On Sept. 29th, there will be a Health Fair here at the club. A nurse will be present to give flu and pneumonia shots. This will be our last day for Senior Meals. We have enjoyed helping our seniors this past year and will now look for a new project to serve our community. Other projects that will continue are helping the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, the George West Nursing Home, issuing scholarships annually and allowing the community to use the building for various functions.

It was brought up that the Jim Wells County Fair is Oct. 19-23rd. The members agreed to participate by selling our club book, cookbook, raffle tickets and handmade items.

Our annual Christmas Bazaar will be Saturday, Nov. 13th. Plan to come do your Christmas shopping! The members are busy creating those beautiful handmade items that we will feature for your shopping pleasure.

Our Sept. birthday girls could not be present for us to sing “Happy Birthday” but we want to recognize them. They were Kay Schuette, Susie Atwood and Lee Smith. The door prize was drawn and Joyce Sattler was our winner. She won a beautiful necklace and earring set. The meeting was then adjourned.

The next meeting for the Lagarto Community Club will be Oct. 14th. The ladies decided to dress in costume and have prizes for the winners. Anyone interested in joining this group is welcome to attend.
