If a tribute was ever well deserved, not to mention five years overdue, it’s to the military veterans of this community.

A new veterans’ monument is expected to be completed by Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at the Veterans Memorial Stadium at A.C. Jones High School.

The local chapters of Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars should be commended for working together to bring about this project.

The front of the monument, already in place, contains a dedication plaque that reads, “in honor of all veterans.” It displays the emblems of all U.S. military services.

The monument will include a granite front with a wall of nameplates in honor or in memory of loved ones who have served this country.

Behind the monument will be the flags of all five branches of service. An American flag will stand to the left of the structure, and a POW/MIA flag on the right.

Again, it’s only appropriate that we honor the names and memories of those who have fought and died to protect the United States and its citizens – especially as America remains at war in Afghanistan and against Al Qaeda terrorists around the globe.

If other public gathering places, such as DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, have monuments honoring our war veterans, Beeville’s high school stadium should as well since it bears the name.

Servicemen and women, we salute you. Thank you for allowing us the freedom to enjoy football and other favorite pastimes.
