Community leaders and members founded the Tynan Recreation Club in 1952. The Tynan Recreation Hall serves as a gathering place for area and local business expos and meetings for church groups, cancer drives, 4-H clubs and the South Texas Trail Riders, as well as wedding receptions and family reunions. The Tynan Recreation Club is comprised of multiple cultures, heritages and ethnic groups.
The Cook-Off is sanctioned by IBCA and will consist of three categories: brisket, chicken and pork spareribs. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places in each category, grand champion and reserve champion. Proceeds will benefit the Tynan Recreation Club Youth Scholarship Fund. Beans and chili have been added as special cash categories. Spotting of the “pits” will open on Friday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. and close at 8 p.m., reopening at 5 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, and closing at 8 a.m. An average of 17 teams for the last three years have come to participate.
A free dance will be held from 7 to 11 p.m., following the cook-off, with entertainment to be announced later. Doors for the dance will open at 6 p.m.
Judges are needed foe the following: chili (judging at 11 a.m.); beans (judging at noon); chicken (judging at 2 p.m.); pork spareribs (judging at 3 p.m.; and brisket (judging at 4 p.m.). It is requested that judges be present at least 15 minutes prior to judging time. Presentation of the awards and cash prizes will be as soon as possible after the brisket has been judged and the scores have been tallied.
