The Three Rivers Bulldogs behind at third, steal the lead in final quarter

The Three Rivers Bulldogs opened district play on Jan. 2, hosting the Dilley Wolves.

The Bulldogs looked rusty early on, however after the first quarter of play, the ‘Dawgs held a 9-5 advantage. In the 2nd quarter, the Bulldogs fullcourt pressure led to several Dilley turnovers. The Dawgs moved out to a 14 point lead but Dilley fought back. By the end of the 2nd quarter, the Bulldogs were up 27-20.

In the 3rd, the Bulldogs went cold and the Wolves took advantage. Dilley took the lead on several big shots and at the end of three quarters, the Wolves held the lead, 36-33.

In the 4th, Dilley would stretch their lead to 6 but the Bulldogs came storming back and outscored the Wolves 16-5 in the final quarter to seal the victory 49-41.

Preston Pennington led all scorers with a season high 26 pts. Logan Muniz chipped in 13, Travis Escamilla 6, Garret Luthringer and John Morgan Ross had 2 a piece.

Escamilla led the way rebounding with 15 boards. Muniz also contributed a team high 4 steals and 3 assists. The Dawgs are now 8-6 on the year and 1-0 in District. They will travel to Cotulla on Tuesday (Jan. 6).

The JV Boys will play at 5 p.m. and the varsity boys at 8 p.m.

On Friday, the Bulldogs will host the Odem Owls in a non-district contest with JV Boys tipping off at 5 p.m. and the Varsity Boys tipping off at 6:30 p.m.
