George West varsity shows great effort in early season contests

George West Varsity Boys beat McMullen Cowboys in a non-district contest by a score of 68-49. The Longhorns played extremely well on defense. Outstanding defense performances were turned in by Michael Blevins, Shannon Taylor, Kenneth BIevins, Cameron Moore, Albert Gamez, Donavan Grimes. Offensively the Longhorns were led by

Colton Tindel who rang up 23 points, Oscar Martinez had 16 points, Travis Walker had 14 points, Marcus Miller had 10 points, Gomez had 6 points, Taylor and Grimes both had 4 points each. It was a great team effort. Great job Longhorns and Good Luck in District!

January 2 the Longhorns had their district opener against Natalia Mustangs. The Mustangs came in with an 11-4 record. Both teams played well offensively in the first quarter. The Mustangs held a 20-14 led after the first quarter. The Horns went scoreless for four minutes in the second quarter and fell behind 47-27 at halftime. In the second half the Horns played better defensively. Leading the way on defense were Gamez, Miller, Blevins, and Taylor. Leading the way on offense was Miller with 20 points, Martinez with 14 points, Tindel had 8 points, Moore had 6 points, Gamez had 6 points, Walker and Grimes both had 2 points each. The final score was Natalia 78-56.

Coach Paweick said he was very proud of the effort his team gave and never giving up...Natalia was an extremely quick team. With the defeat the Longhorns fall to 0-1 in district.

They will be in Jourdanton on Tuesday and at home on Friday against Dilley. Game time for varsity will be 7:45 p.m.
