Ella Lowrance, a sophomore bassoonist proved her superior musical skills in a big way at the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble contest. Ella is the first soloist from George West to be awarded a division one superior rating at this event!

The contest was held on the Memorial Day weekend (May 28-30) at Hendricks High School in Pflugerville. All participants qualified by performing a class one (most difficult level) solo from memory and receiving a division one rating at their regional competitions last February.

Judges are instructed to only grant division one ratings for truly professional quality performances. Ella’s judge, Dr. Robert Krause only awarded 6 division one ratings the entire day. Ella’s was his first that day. After her performance he commented to her band director, James Cordani, how lucky he must feel to have such a fine bassoon player in his band.

Dr. Krause’s second division one rating of the day came a few minutes later. It was awarded to our own Longhorn Band Woodwind Quintet. The group made up of Wesley Iley, Hannah Davis, Lauren Cordani, Ella Lowrance and Karen Rock performed Handel’s “Water Music” Suite. Like Ella, they are the first ensemble from George West to earn a division one rating in state competition.

Ten students from the Longhorn band qualified for the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble this year. They are Mario Rodriguez, Joseph Gonzales, Michelle Smith, Zachory McAlister, Samantha Cantu, Wesley Iley, Lauren Cordani, Hannah Davis, Ella Lowrance and Karen Rock.

“Congratulations to these fine musicians for earning a spot at the state level,” Cordani stated.
