George West would open up the game a little sluggish offensively though, turning the ball over twice on their first two possessions inside the Cowboy 30 yard line. On their third possession, the Horns began to move the ball and were able to sustain a drive that took them deep into Cowboy territory right before the quarter ended. That would then set up the first score of the night for the Horns. Which came on the first play of the second quarter, a 15 touchdown run by QB Brady Jones around right end to put the Horns on the board. The PAT by Jesse Haros would be successful to make the score 7-0 GW with 11:52 to play in the second quarter.
The Horns defense would then force a three and out to get the ball back. On the ensuing possession, the Horns would strike quickly, putting together a 60 yard drive in two plays. A 35 yard run by junior RB Bobby Torres around right end would set up the Horns at the Cowboy 25 yard line. On the next play, senior RB Seth Pipkin would go around left end for 25 yards to the end zone. The PAT by Haros would put the Horns up 14-0 with eight minutes remaining till the half.
The offensive explosion would continue when the Horns received the ball on their next possession at their own 20 yard line after a Cotulla punt. On the first play of the drive, junior RB Enrique Nieto would explode up the heart of the Cowboy defense and continue 80 yards to paydirt for the third score of the night for the Horns. The PAT by Haros would make it 21-0 with 6:20 to go till half. Nieto would end up being the leading rusher of the night for GW, gaining 114 yards on only 9 carries. The final score of the half would come when QB Jones would hit senior WR Kendall Hensley in stride for a 48 yard td strike through the air. A successful PAT by Haros would put the Horns up 28-0 at the half.
As the third quarter began, the Horns picked up where they left off before the half. Taking the opening kickoff and marching down the field in a seven play drive that would end with a 36 yard run by Pipkin around left end for his second TD of the night. Putting the Horns up 34-0 with 8 minutes to play in the third. The final score of the night would come when junior RB Jacob Almaguer would blast right up the gut for an 80 yard td run of his own. Haros would then split the uprights again for his fifth PAT of the night, putting the Horns up 41-0, and that’s how the game would stay.
The Longhorn defense looked just as they did in their previous game vs San Diego. Giving up only five first downs to the Cowboys as well as forcing them to punt five times. The Horns defense saw the return of senior LB Pipkin, who picked up 11 tackles along with a sack in the win for the Horns. Junior corner Hudson Wallace also had a great game, picking up 9 tackles in the win.
The Horns will be facing a tough Jourdanton squad this Friday, who will be bringing a strong 6-0 record to their big district matchup with the Horns that includes wins over Three Rivers and Stockdale. Gametime will be at 7:30pm in Jourdanton.
