Fisherman teams bring home prizes in Bass Champs tournament on Falcon Lake

The Bass Champs South Championship was held at Lake Falcon on Oct. 8 and 9 with 163 teams entered. There was a total of 1,246 fish caught weighing 6,234.44 lbs., an average of 5 lbs. per fish. Forty two limits were reached and only ten teams caught no fish at all.

Several teams of local fishermen competed in the tournament, with two teams finishing in the top twenty-five places. In 12th place, Daniel Rodriguez of New Braunfels and Cary Pruski of Three Rivers caught ten fish weighing a total of 65.78 lbs. Their big bass weighed 9.10 lbs. They took home a prize of $900.

Following in 14th place was the team of J.W. Lackey of Kerrville and Doug Baker of Three Rivers with ten fish weighing in at 63.86 lbs., with a big bass of 10.89 lbs. Their winnings totaled $800.

In 83rd place, Elroy Krueger of Three Rivers and partner Charles Wilson of Pearsall brought in ten fish for a total of 41.37 lbs.

Buford Estep, Jr. and Buford Estep, Sr. of Three Rivers and Kenny Walpole, Jr. and Refugia Walpole of George West were also in the tournament.

The Bass Champs 2012 season will start with the South Region Jan. 14th on Lake Falcon.

Fishing report for Choke Canyon Reservoir:

Water clear; 72–76 degrees; 10.79’ low. Black bass are good on pumpkinseed soft plastic worms and Rat–L–Traps. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are fair on stinkbait in 10–20 feet. Yellow catfish are fair on live perch and goldfish.
