The junior high girls kicked off their season with a win over Pettus and followed it up with a convincing win over Pawnee.
The junior high boys traveled to Falls City for a seventh and eighth grade game with the Beavers. The Cowboys lost both games but they were both very close. We played Pawnee for our next game and soundly defeated them.
The Varsity Cowgirls are 2-1 after posting wins over Pettus (42-35) and Nordheim while suffering a tough home loss to Three Rivers (52-50). The Pettus game was going to be a scrimmage but when we got there we were informed that we had to play it as a game. Despite having only having three full days of practice, the Cowgirls played with a great deal of effort and we captured a nice road win.
In the Three Rivers game we were up 28-19 at halftime and actually had a twelve point lead early in the third quarter. Three Rivers began to mount a comeback and we made some costly mistakes down the stretch that really hurt us. We actually got a good look at the basket at the end of the game but couldn’t convert. Turnovers and foul trouble plagued us in this game.
Mamie Shelton lead us in scoring with 27 followed by Destinee Thomas with 12. Jasmyn Smith tallied six points followed by Allie Donnell with three and Heather Gillin with two. We defeated Nordheim last Friday and everyone contributed to the team win. Donnell leading us in scoring with 15 followed by Hailey Ruiz and Smith with 12 with the following Cowgirls scoring- Mamie Shelton, ten; Destinee Thomas, eight; Danielle Dawson and Anna Castren, five; and Lidia McBee and Heather Gillin adding two.
The Cowboys opened up their season with a road trip to Mathis. The Cowboys were defeated 43-27. Nathan Dillard lead the Cowboys in scoring with 13 followed by Colt Cruz with eight and Clay Atkinson and Trent Ruhman tossed in two each.
This past Friday the Cowboys kicked off their home opener with a convincing 53-27 win over Nordheim. The Cowboys were up 25-8 at halftime and cruised home with the victory. Dillard tallied 16 points to lead the home team while Atkinson chipped in 15 and Cruz added 12. The following Cowboys scored as well Kyle Engelking, four; Wyatt Shelton, Brandon Patterson, and Nolan Barnes, two.
Before the Thanksgiving break our junior high teams will have played at Charlotte on Monday and our high school teams have a home game versus VCA on Monday and then travel to Three Rivers for a game on Tuesday.
