The McMullen County Cowgirls received an early Christmas gift as they defeated San Isidro in their district opener this past Tuesday by downing the visitors, 58-37.

We started off very slowly and were down by one after one quarter of play, 7-6. We picked up the defensive intensity and had a big second quarter scoring twenty one points and went in at halftime with a 27-13 lead. We also had a nice third quarter as we limited San Isidro to only four points while adding eighteen for us and held a convincing 45-17 lead after three quarters of play.

We did a really good job of pressuring their point guard. Our post players stepped up inside and made some nice moves around the basket. Scoring for the Cowgirls were as follows: Mamie Shelton-22, Destinee Thomas-13, Danielle Dawson-10, Allie Donnell- seven, Hailey Ruiz and Jasmyn Smith-three. This was a nice team win as every Cowgirl contributed to the victory. Team members for the Cowgirls are as follows: Anna Castren, Lidia McBee, Allie Donnell, Mamie Shelton, Destinee Thomas, Jasmyn Smith, Danielle Dawson, Heather Gillin, Mariah Mesa and Hailey Ruiz.

We will be off until the George West Tournament and we open with Odem on that Tue. Dec. 27, at noon and play tourney host George West at 7:30 p.m.

The Cowboys will be playing in this tourney as well and open play on Tues. at 1:30 p.m. versus Odem and then play Three Rivers at 6 p.m.. The Cowboys have been playing well and will have their district opener versus San Perlita on Friday, Jan 6.

Our Junior High teams posted big wins over Brooks Academy last Monday. The Cowgirls won 41-13 while the Cowboys won 46-15. Scoring for the Cowgirls- Jordan Stephenson- 20, Sarita Cavazos- 14, Callie Cruz- eight, Mirza Bazan and Heather Haines- two.
