The GW JV team lost to Cotulla last Tuesday, Jan. 13 in Cotulla. The Lady Horns got off to a slow start in the first half of the contest scoring only two points in each quarter, both coming from two free throws by Rylie Shannon and a lay up by Alexa Wheeler. At halftime Cotulla was up 16-4.

A re-charged Lady Horn squad came out after halftime with more intensity and determination. The team scored on turnovers off the press and showed more patience in running the offense, resulting in quality shots taken.

In the third and fourth quarters, GW scored seven and 10 points respectively. The first half scoring deficit was too much to overcome and the JV Lady Horns lost 21-30.

Sydney Williamson led all scoring with eight, Amber Villafranca and Wheeler four, Kiesha Lazo, Elizabeth Cansino and Shannon each contributed two and Kaity Taylor added one.

On Friday, Jan. 16, the JV squad played host to Three Rivers. The game was a close contest with TR leading all the way into the fourth quarter.

GW scored six and seven points in the first and second quarter and went in at halftime with 13. TR scored 12 and four in the first half and led with 16.

GW struggled in the third only putting up two points. TR had five players adding to the scoreboard in the third and took a nine point lead over the JV Lady Horns. A hustling, aggressive GW team took over the game in the fourth quarter scoring 10 points while shutting down their opponent.

The team ran a full court press and a tough man defense which created turnovers and scoring opportunities. With less than two minutes to go, free throws from Villafranca and a stolen pass and score from Courtney Larson put GW up by one point. Shannon stole the ball at half court on an in bound pass and sealed the win for GW.

Scoring totals for GW were: Wheeler and Villafranca six each, Larson and Cansino four each, Williamson three and Taylor two. GW is 4-2 in district play.
