The McMullen County Cowgirls and Cowboys had a good week of basketball as they captured two home wins this past week. Both groups defeated CCCP and Lasara. In the girls game it was all Cowgirls as they defeated CCCP, 61-4.

CCCP was really shorthanded as they only had five players. Each girl contributed to the win. In the boys game, the Cowboys captured their first district win by a score of 61-44. The Cowboys were up 12 at halftime, 25-13 and pushed the lead to 20, 44-24, with a 19 point third quarter. Scoring for the Cowboys is as follows- Jandrew Spence- 14, Nathan Dillard- 11, Nolan Barnes- nine, Trey Kuenstler, Austin Serrata, and Colt Cruz- six, Clay Atkinson- five, Brandon Patterson- four.

In the Lasara game the Cowgirls set the tone early with a great defensive effort. We held the Lady Lions to eight points for the half taking a 25-8 lead. We had a nice third quarter scoring 14 points but we gave up 13 in this stanza. We need to do a better job in defensive transition. Lasara was 4-0 coming into this game so it was nice to defend our homecourt and get the win. Scoring for the Cowgirls is as follows- Destinee Thomas- 13, Mamie Shelton- 12, Allie Donnell- nine, Danielle Dawson and Anna Castren- eight, Mariah Mesa- two. In the Cowboys game it was an up and down affair with each team going on runs in the first half. The Cowboys seemed to be pulling away early but Lasara hit some three pointers to keep them in the game. The Cowboys were up ten at halftime, 36-26. The Lions actually cut the lead to six early in the third quarter but the Cowboys had a huge run and pushed their lead to 15 at the end of the third stanza, 54-39 and cruised home the rest of the way with a 71-47 victory. Dillard had a big night recording a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Atkinson poured in 19 points with four three pointers followed by Spence with 14 and Cruz with ten. Patterson played solid defense once again and took a big charge in the third quarter. Barnes also came in off the bench and provided some big minutes and also scored two points along with Trent Rhumann. Serrata also added one point. The Cowboys are currently 2-1 in District.

The Junior High Cowboys and Cowgirls hosted a tournament this past weekend. The Cowboys captured first defeating Brooks Academy and Ben Bolt. The Cowgirls placed second, defeating Brooks Academy and lost to a good Ben Bolt team. A big thanks to all who helped with the tournament and for those who provided food and drinks.

This is a big week for the Cowboys and Cowgirls as we take a trip to San Isidro on Friday. This will be the start of the second round for the Cowgirls.
