The McMullen County Cowgirls had a good week of basketball as they defeated VCA out of Victoria and Junction. In the VCA game we regrouped from a tough road loss at Lasara and won 53-33. We held a ten point lead at halftime and then put the game out of reach with a 15-6 third quarter. Scoring for the Cowigirls were Destinee Thomas 11, Jasmyn Smith and Mamie Shelton eight, Danielle Dawson and Allie Donnell seven, Hailey Ruiz six, Lidia McBee three, and Mariah Mesa two. Last Friday we traveled to Junction for a warm up game and got a nice road win, 33-27. We played really well defensively. Scoring for the Cowgirls were Anna Castren 13, Shelton seven, Donnell six, Thomas and Dawson two, Smith and Heather Gillin one. As of now we’re the District Champion. We will get a bye the first round and then will play the winner of Fayetteville and Austwell Tivoli.

The Cowboys had a rough week as they suffered losses to VCA and San Isidro. In the VCA game the Cowboys were defeated 57-43. We played real well in the first half and had a 28-24 lead at halftime. VCA had a big third quarter outscoring us 19-7 and we could never recover. Scoring for the Cowboys were Clay Atkinson 14, Colt Cruz 13, Nathan Dillard and Trey Kuentsler four, Austen Serrata, Joaquin Cavazos, Brandon Patterson, and Jandrew Spence two.

In the San Isidro game we were defeated 41-36. This was a must win for us to stay in the playoff hunt. We played really well defensively. The last time we played we gave up 65 points but this time we competed and did a great job putting the clamps on them. We took a five point lead in at half but they out scored us 11-5 in the third quarter to take a 28-27 lead at the end of the third and we could never regain the lead. Scoring for the Cowboys were Atkinson 12, Spence 10, Dillard eight, Cruz four, Nolan Barnes two.
