Longhorn hardball opens season 3-0

The George West Varsity baseball opened the season with three straight wins. In the opener, the Longhorns traveled to San Diego and defeated the Vaqueros by a score of 6-2.

Tyler Townsend was the winning pitcher. He pitched four innings and struck out nine batters. Andrew Katzfey pitched the final three innings. Andrew struck out six batters.Lucas Barcak and Brady Jones each scored two runs for the Longhorns. Jeffrey Hardwick and Enrique Nieto each scored a run. Seth Pipkin, Lucas Barcak, Jeffrey Hardwick, Brady Jones each had a hit for the Longhorns. Great defensive games were played by Caleb Montgomery, Quest Newberry, Trae Smith and Enrique Nieto.

On Friday, the Longhorns traveled to San Diego for the San Diego Vaquero tournament. In the first game, the Longhorns had an exciting come from behind win to defeat the Orange Grove Bulldogs by a score of 4-2. The Longhorns trailed the Bulldogs by one run with two outs and Moore on base in the last at bat. Jeffrey Hardwick got a two out walk and then Derek Cantu stole home for the fourth Longhorn run.

Derek Cantu pitched three and a half innings. Tyler Townsend come in and pitched the final one and two thirds innings and picked up his second out of the season. Great defensive games were played by Andrew Katzfey, Lucas Barcak, Bobby Torres, Caleb Montgomery, Seth Pipkin, Brady Jones, Derek Cantu and Jeffrey Hardwick.

In the night, the Longhorns defeated the Taft Greyhounds by a score of 7-4. Enrique Nieto pitched a great game. He pitched up his first win of the season. He pitched three and two thirds innings and gave up four hits and struck out two. Andrew Katzfey came in and pitched up his second save. Andrew Katzfey was two for two with two RBI’s. Bobby Torres had an inside the park home run and drove in two runs. Seth Pipkin had a triple and Brady Jones a double. Enrique Nieto had two RBI’s double. Trae Smith had a RBI single.

The championship game on Saturday was rained out. The Longhorns will next play in the Mathis Tournament March 1-3 in Mathis. The Longhorns will take on Freer on Thursday at 3 p.m.
