Longhorn varsity baseball team competes at Pirate tourney

The Longhorn Varsity baseball team attended the Mathis tournament this past weekend. The Horns won all three of their pool games.

In the first game, the Horns defeated a great Freer team by a score of 6-5. Tyler Townsend picked up the pitching win. Townsend pitched four and two thirds innings and struck out six Freer Buckaroos. He gave up three earned runs. Andrew Katzfey came in and recorded the final out on a strike out for his third save of the season. The leading hitters for the Longhorns were Townsend 2-2, Katzfey 2-2, Derek Cantu 2-3, Jeffrey Hardwick 1-2.

In the second game of pool play, the Longhorns defeated Taft by a score of 12-1. Cantu picked up his first win of the season. Cantu struck out seven Taft Greyhounds in four innings of work. Offensively, the Longhorns were led by Bobby Torres 2-2, Seth Pipkin 2-3, Cantu 2-2, Katzfey 2-2, Enrique Nieto 1-2, Jeffrey Hardwick 1-2, Townsend 1-2, Lucas Barcak 1-2.

In the final game of pool play, the Longhorns defeated the host team the Mathis Pirates in an exciting extra inning win 6-3. It was the third come from behind victory of the season. The Longhorns pounded out ten hits to only four for the Pirates. Cantu was 1-4 with a triple a double, Brady Jones 2-3 with a triple and double, Pipkin 1-3, Hardwick and Torres each had a hit.

In the Championship game, the Longhorns lost to an undefeated Refugio by a score of 6-1. The Longhorns got a great pitching performance by Torres. He pitched three innings and gave three runs and struck out three.

The Longhorns are now 6-1 on the season. Cantu was voted to the All Tournament Team. Congrats, Longhorns, on a great and exciting start to the season.
